Working With Dreams (Chapter 2, Behind the Scenes)

I work with dreams in a variety of ways, all of which provide me information and assist me in my life.  Dreams come in many forms.  Some dreams assist us in solving problems or creating balance from our waking life.  Some are precognitive - they predict events that will occur the future.    In others, we are visited by deceased loved ones.  In still others, we may visit with our family and friends on astral levels.  In fact, I believe that entire relationships may exist in the dream state.  Dreams connect us to our higher selves and to the universal unconscious.  They are a largely untapped resource of healing and guidance in our lives.

I’ve had several "dream" visitations from deceased friends and family.  My paternal grandmother has visited me on several occasions where we just sat and talked.

In 1996, my dear friend Kent died of AIDS on the very same day that I heard my unborn son’s heartbeat for the first time.  Knowing that we'd probably lose Kent later that day, I sobbed as I left his hospital bedside to hail a cab to my doctor's appointment.  I arrived 15 minutes late and so they weren't going to see me.  Then I broke down and sobbed some more, explaining why I had been late to the appointment.  I hadn't wanted to leave my dying friend, and yet I so needed to hear my baby's heartbeat.  They conceded to seeing me and I'll never forget, as I heard the beating on the monitor, the bittersweet feelings of life and death, grief and celebration, all happening in my life at once.  Shortly thereafter, Kent came to say goodbye to me in a dream.  He let me know that he was alright - in fact, he was dancing joyfully with a bunch of very attractive men (others who had passed of AIDS also) on a club on the beach.  It was good to see him so vibrant and restored to full health again.  I'd missed his smile and that twinkle in his eyes for so long.

Dreams played a significant role in my relationship with my partner, Holly, even before we got together.  Holly and I became a couple after having unspoken feelings for one another for several years.   Three years before we got together, I had a short, powerful dream in which Holly and I were riding in a red pick up truck together.  As we drove along, she placed her hand over mine on the seat and we smiled at each other.  The dream was so startling that I shared it with friends.

Two years later, I continued having dreams of being with Holly, often when I was at the happiest moments of my relationship with Barb.  Eventually, Barb and I separated.  Although Holly and I continued to have only sporadic contact, we later discovered that we'd had the same dreams of being together, often below deck, on a ship!  In these dreams, we were frequently stopped from kissing and embracing due to the intrusion of others or because of storms that threatened to destroy the ship.  I suspect that we were reliving memories of a past life together.  If nothing else, we both agree that our shared dreams led us to feel that we had been involved for many years before we actually came together.

My friend Sandy, who passed away from cancer several years ago, has come to me twice in dreams to talk about life "on the other side".  Sandy and I had met at Al-anon in San Francisco .  She quickly became like a big sister to me and eventually, we gave birth to our sons one month apart, and they became best buddies.  However, only two weeks before her death did we discover that we had family ties; I had been her niece's best friend in high school - in Omaha , Nebraska !

In Sandy 's first visitation, I was standing in a large circle of people which appeared to be a powwow.  As I looked across the circle, I suddenly saw Sandy .  She smiled at me and motioned me over.  She looked healthy and happy again.  Telepathically, I asked her how it was on the other side and how she was doing.  She telepathically responded that she was doing well.  But she wanted me to know that when we cross over, we continue to deal with the same issues that we faced on earth.  She showed me that we carry our basic personalities with us, but that we have a greater perspective that helps us in gaining understanding of the circumstances of our life.  She said she was still working on herself and still learning and growing.  Then she hugged me and said goodbye.

I was quite astonished with this dream.  Somehow, I had the impression that when we died, our personalities, which I equated with ego, were obsolete.  But Sandy made it clear that our personality stays intact and the work on ourselves continues.  Although our perspective changes drastically once we are no longer earthbound, there is no spiritual awakening simply because you have left your body.  What a revelation.  Still skeptical, I told an acquaintance about Sandy 's visitation.  My friend said that she had just read the same thing in a book.  So I purchased Journey of Souls to find out more.

To my surprise, the books Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls, both by Michael Newton, taught me many new concepts and also confirmed a lot of what I believed happened between lives.  I highly recommend Newton 's books for study of the "interlife" and how we transition between living and dying.

Sandy 's second dream visitation came a couple years later.  In the dream, I was sitting across from Sandy and she was speaking to me telepathically to me once again.  This time, she "spoke" about the issue of our desire for material wealth.  She explained how on earth, material wealth and abundance can be hard to come by due to the density of earth's atmosphere and because we forget that we can simply create anything we want with our thoughts.

Sandy continued by showing me that on the other side, souls can instantaneously create anything they want, simply by thinking of it.  She said if you want to live in a castle, you just create one with your imagination.  If you want to live by the ocean or on a mountain, you simply think it into being.  If you want to travel to exotic locations, you can, just by thinking yourself there.  She went on to explain that on the other side, souls no longer need be focused on making money or obtaining material goods for their survival, security, ego or pleasure.

Sandy explained that when people cross over, many spend their early time creating beautiful things and exciting experiences because they felt so deprived on earth.  They are thrilled to discover (or remember) that they can create things just with their imaginations!  However, she continued, souls eventually tire of this activity and return to focusing on their spiritual growth and development once again.

I found Sandy 's message very exciting.  We can create our realities, but it is difficult due to the density of our atmosphere, to our limited conditioning, and most certainly to the fact that we've simply (by design) forgotten how to!  What if we all woke up to the reality that we can create anything we'd like simply by focusing our thoughts strongly enough...

Last year, my maternal grandmother died.  One week before she passed, I dreamt that she came to say goodbye to me.  We had never been particularly close and I had not seen her in twenty years.  In the dream, she stood inside the screen door of an old wooden building.  I stood out on the porch, looking at her through the screen.  It wasn't easy to see her, for there were no lights on inside.  As she peered at me through the screen door, she smiled and telepathically said goodbye, letting me know she was going to die.  The next morning, I called my mother to tell her about the dream.  She told me that my grandmother, who had survived many years of cancer, broken hips and multiple illnesses, was now refusing to eat.  I immediately wrote my grandmother to tell her that I loved her and to say good-bye.  My aunt read the letter to her just before her death.  I am told that it meant a great deal to her to hear from me.

We can also make contact with our spirit guides through our dreams.  In 1988, I had a dream of a huge Indian chief floating in mid-air before me.  He told me to "break old records".  Astonished by the vividness of the dream, I woke up, but soon talked myself out of believing it as real.  I laid back down and soon fell back to sleep.  Again, the chief appeared, floating in mid-air and instructed me to "just believe, just believe", so I did.  I later learned that his name is Sitting Bull and he was my grandfather in other lives.  He remains a strong teacher and guide to me from the other side.

Ten years later, I sought a guide who would help me develop my psychic ability.  Before falling asleep one night, I asked a guide to make itself known to me through a dream.  In the dream, I was sitting at my desk at work when a fax arrived.  I pulled the sheet of paper off the machine and in big, bold letters was the word, “Solatiev”.  As silly as it seemed, I knew that was my guide introducing himself.  I perceived him as a violet/blue energy field, about 10 feet tall.  I intuitively knew that he had not ever been in human form, and I was shown that he was an ascended master of the highest form (whatever that meant!).  Although he is not truly male, I feel his energy as strong, supportive and protective.  Whenever I conduct psychic readings or mediumship, I always invoke his support and guidance.  I now have a "team" of guides who support me in my work and in my life, most of whom have also come to me through dreams.

When I first "met" Solatiev, I worried that he was just a figment of my imagination.  At that time, I attended a Spiritualist church.  Spiritualists subscribe to the belief that your deceased ancestors act become your spirit guides. The church does not generally accept the idea of non-earthly entities working as spirit guides.    At each service, the pastor conducted mini readings for his congregants as proof of the continuation of life after death.  Usually, the pastor would psychically see and describe our deceased family members who were around us, providing support and guidance.  One morning, it was my turn for a reading.  Much to my surprise and delight, my pastor described Solatiev just as I saw and felt him, explaining that he was, in fact, my spirit guide.

As you can tell from these amazing experiences, dreams are a powerful source of information and support in our lives.  Dreams can be the bridge between our conscious mind and reality, to our unconscious awareness, higher self and spirit teachers.
